The fourth online academic seminar of the Spring Semester of 2021-2022 will be given by Dr. Emre Uğur. The title of his talk is "Cognitive and Developmental Robot Learning". The abstract of his talk, his short bio, and the link to the seminar are given below.

Abstract:

In recent years, we are witnessing steep progress in the fields of Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics due to recent advances in deep learning techniques, special hardware, and incredible amounts of data for learning. The question is: Are we closer to building robotic systems with sensorimotor and cognitive capabilities similar to humans? Do we just need more data and more powerful hardware systems in order to train robots that we are familiar with from science fiction movies? In the first part of this talk, I will try to convince you that the fundamental questions in the quest of creating artificial general intelligence are yet to be answered. In the second part, I will talk about the ongoing studies in our lab on cognitive and developmental robotics, which are inspired by the principles of infant development.

Bio:

Emre Ugur is an Associate Professor in Dept. of Computer Engineering, Bogazici University, the chair of the Cognitive Science MA Program, and the head of the Cognition, Learning and Robotics (CoLoRs) lab. He received his PhD degree in Computer Engineering from METU. He worked as a research scientist at ATR, Japan; visited Osaka University as a specially appointed Assist.&Assoc. Professor; and worked as a senior researcher in University of Innsbruck. He is interested in robotics, robot learning, and cognitive robotics.
